Bennie Thompson

Bennie Thompson, born on January twenty-eighth, nineteen forty-eight, is a prominent American politician and educator. He has been serving as the U.S. representative for Mississippi's 2nd congressional district since nineteen ninety-three. A dedicated member of the Democratic Party, Thompson has made significant contributions to American politics, particularly in the realm of homeland security.

From two thousand seven to two thousand eleven and again from two thousand nineteen to two thousand twenty-three, Thompson held the esteemed position of chair of the Committee on Homeland Security. Notably, he was the first Democrat and the first African American to lead this committee, marking a historic milestone in its history.

Thompson's congressional district encompasses most of Jackson and is recognized as the only majority-black district in Mississippi. Stretching approximately two hundred seventy-five miles long and one hundred eighty miles wide, it borders the Mississippi River and includes a significant portion of the Mississippi Delta, which is integral to the region's cultural and economic landscape.

Since two thousand eleven, Thompson has been the sole Democrat representing Mississippi in Congress. Following the departure of Thad Cochran, he has also held the title of dean of the delegation since two thousand eighteen, further solidifying his leadership role within the state's political framework.
