Berengar II of Italy

Berengar II of Italy, born in the year nine hundred, was a prominent political figure who ascended to the throne as king of Italy in nine hundred fifty. His lineage traced back to the notable Anscarid and Unruoching dynasties, and he was named in honor of his maternal grandfather, Berengar I.

He began his political career as the margrave of Ivrea, a position he inherited from his father around the year nine hundred twenty-three. Known as Berengar of Ivrea, he became a significant player in the aristocratic opposition against kings Hugh and Lothair II in the years leading up to his reign.

Upon succeeding Lothair II in nine hundred fifty, Berengar crowned his son, Adalbert, as co-ruler, marking a pivotal moment in his rule. In nine hundred fifty-two, he acknowledged the suzerainty of Otto I of Germany, although this alliance was short-lived as he later joined a revolt against Otto.

In nine hundred sixty, Berengar launched an invasion of the Papal States, a bold move that ultimately led to his downfall. The following year, his kingdom fell to Otto's forces, and Berengar managed to evade capture until his surrender in nine hundred sixty-four. Unfortunately, he spent his final years imprisoned in Germany, where he passed away two years later.
