Berengaria of Navarre

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Berengaria of Navarre

Berengaria of Navarre, born in 1165, was a significant historical figure as the Queen of England through her marriage to Richard I. She was the eldest daughter of Sancho VI of Navarre and Sancha of Castile, yet much of her life remains shrouded in mystery, a common fate for many medieval queens.

Traditionally regarded as 'the only English queen never to set foot in the country', Berengaria's life took a different turn after her husband's death. While it is believed she may have visited England posthumously, she never did so during her marriage, which was notably childless. Her time with Richard was limited, as he was often engaged in his crusading endeavors.

In a rare departure from the norm for a crusader's wife, Berengaria accompanied Richard at the onset of the Third Crusade. However, she primarily resided in his French territories, where she was known for her generosity towards the church. Despite her noble status, she faced challenges in securing the pension owed to her by Richard's brother and successor, John, after becoming a widow.
