Bermudo I of Asturias

Bermudo I of Asturias, also known as Vermudo or Veremund, was a significant figure in the history of the Asturian kingdom, reigning from 788 or 789 until his abdication in 791. Born around the year seven hundred fifty, he was the son of Fruela of Cantabria and a nephew of Alfonso I, positioning him within a notable lineage. His ascension to the throne followed the death of Mauregatus, who had ruled through a coup d'état, suggesting that Bermudo's election was a strategic move by the nobility to maintain control and prevent the rise of Alfonso II, the rightful heir.

Despite his noble lineage and the support of the palatine officials, Bermudo's reign was short-lived. He faced immediate challenges, notably an Arab-Berber invasion that culminated in the Battle of the Burbia River in seven hundred ninety-one. This battle marked a significant moment in Asturian-Arab relations, as Bermudo was defeated, and the Muslim commander Yūsuf ibn Bukht was recorded as his opponent. The defeat led to his abdication, although the circumstances—whether voluntary or under pressure—remain unclear.

Following his abdication, Bermudo was succeeded by Alfonso II and left behind a son who would later become Ramiro I. Historical accounts describe him as a generous and illustrious man, characterized by his mercy and piety. After stepping down from the throne, it is believed that he lived for many years, possibly as a monk, maintaining amicable relations with his successor.
