Bermudo II of León

Bermudo II of León, known as el Gotoso, was born in the year nine hundred fifty-three and ruled as a significant figure in the Kingdom of León until his death in September of nine hundred ninety-nine. His reign was marked by turmoil and conflict, beginning as a rival king in Galicia from nine hundred eighty-two to nine hundred eighty-four before ascending to the throne of León in nine hundred eighty-four.

His rule was characterized by a series of challenges, notably the relentless pressure from the powerful military leader Almanzor. Justo Pérez de Urbel poignantly described Bermudo as 'the poor king tormented in life by the sword of Almanzor and in death by the vengeful pen of a bishop.' This encapsulates the duality of his existence, plagued by external threats and internal strife.

Criticism of Bermudo's reign is notably captured in the writings of Pelagius of Oviedo, who accused him of imprisoning Bishop Gudesteus of Oviedo during the tumultuous years of the nine hundred ninety's. Pelagius attributed the attacks from Almanzor to the king's own sins, painting a picture of a ruler whose actions had dire consequences for his kingdom.
