Bernadette Devlin McAliskey

Bernadette Devlin McAliskey, born on April twenty-third, nineteen forty-seven, emerged as a significant political figure in Northern Ireland during a tumultuous period. At the young age of twenty-one, she made history by becoming the youngest woman to serve as a British Member of Parliament, representing Mid Ulster from a by-election in nineteen sixty-nine until February nineteen seventy-four. Her decision to break with the traditional Irish republican policy of abstentionism and take her seat in Westminster marked a pivotal moment in her political journey.

McAliskey's tenure as an MP coincided with the onset of the Troubles, a conflict that would shape Northern Ireland for the next three decades. Throughout this time, she remained a staunch advocate for a thirty-two county socialist Irish republic, challenging the existing political landscape. Initially associated with the People's Democracy group, she later co-founded the Irish Republican Socialist Party. However, her commitment to political principles led her to leave the party after a year due to disagreements over the autonomy of its paramilitary wing.

Her political activism continued unabated, notably during the harrowing events of the nineteen eighty-one Irish hunger strike. It was during this period that McAliskey and her husband faced a life-threatening assassination attempt by members of the Ulster Defence Association, a loyalist paramilitary group. Remarkably, she survived being shot nine times in front of her children, an event that underscored the dangers faced by those involved in the conflict.

Since nineteen ninety-seven, McAliskey has dedicated her efforts to community development as the head of the South Tyrone Empowerment Programme, an NGO based in Dungannon. Her work continues to reflect her commitment to social justice and empowerment in her community.
