Bernard Hopkins Jr., born on January 15, 1965, is a celebrated American former professional boxer whose career spanned from 1988 to 2016. Renowned for his remarkable achievements, Hopkins held multiple world championships across two weight classes, including the undisputed middleweight championship from 2001 to 2005 and the lineal light heavyweight championship from 2011 to 2012. His journey to becoming a world champion began in 1995 when he claimed the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) middleweight title.
Throughout his illustrious career, Hopkins demonstrated exceptional skill and tenacity, successfully defending his middleweight title twenty times against seventeen opponents. His unification of the middleweight division in 2001, marked by a victory over Félix Trinidad, solidified his status as a dominant force in boxing. In 2004, he further established his legacy by defeating Oscar De La Hoya for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) title, making him the first male boxer to hold world titles from all four major boxing sanctioning bodies simultaneously.
Despite facing setbacks, including a loss of his undisputed title to Jermain Taylor in 2005, Hopkins continued to defy age and expectations. In 2006, he moved up to light heavyweight, capturing the International Boxing Organization (IBO) and Ring titles at the age of forty-one. His remarkable feat of becoming the oldest boxer to win a world championship at forty-six years old, achieved by defeating Jean Pascal, further cemented his legacy. He broke his own record by winning the IBF light heavyweight title at ages forty-eight and forty-nine.
Known by the nicknames 'The Executioner' and 'The Alien', Hopkins is celebrated for his strategic prowess and defensive skills, often employing the Philly Shell technique. His longevity in the sport is attributed to his mastery of boxing fundamentals and a strong defensive approach. In the latter part of his career, he also became a minority partner with Golden Boy Promotions, a role he continues to embrace post-retirement.
