Bernardo Provenzano

Bernardo Provenzano, born on January thirty-first, nineteen thirty-three, was a notorious Italian mobster who rose to prominence as the chief of the Sicilian Mafia clan known as the Corleonesi. This faction, which originated in the town of Corleone, was infamous for its ruthless tactics and strategic operations within the criminal underworld.

Provenzano earned the moniker 'Binnu u tratturi,' translating to 'Bernie the tractor' in Sicilian, a name that reflected his methodical and brutal approach to eliminating rivals. His other nickname, 'il ragioniere' or 'the accountant,' highlighted his subtle and low-key style of managing his crime empire, especially when compared to the more violent methods of his predecessors.

His criminal career began in earnest when he supported mob boss Luciano Leggio in the ambush and murder of Michele Navarra during the late nineteen fifties. By nineteen sixty-three, Provenzano had become a fugitive following a failed assassination attempt. He was also involved in the Viale Lazio massacre in the late nineteen sixties, further solidifying his reputation within the Mafia.

After Salvatore Riina succeeded Leggio in the mid-seventies, Provenzano became the second-in-command of the Corleonesi. Following the arrests of Riina and Bagarella, he took control of the organization, despite being sentenced to life in absentia during the Maxi Trial in the late nineteen eighties. His criminal activities continued into the nineties, marked by the high-profile bombings that claimed the lives of prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino.

After evading capture for forty-three years, Provenzano was apprehended in two thousand six. He was subsequently subjected to the stringent Article forty-one-bis prison regime until his death on July thirteenth, two thousand sixteen.
