Bernie Sanders, born on September 8, 1941, is a prominent American politician and activist who has served as the senior United States senator from Vermont since 2007. Known for being the longest-serving independent in U.S. congressional history, Sanders has maintained a close relationship with the Democratic Party, caucusing with them throughout most of his career. His ideological stance as a democratic socialist positions him as a leading figure in the modern American progressive movement.
Raised in a working-class Jewish family in New York, Sanders attended Brooklyn College before graduating from the University of Chicago in 1964. During his college years, he was actively involved in the civil rights movement, organizing protests for the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). After moving to Vermont in 1968, he began his political career with several unsuccessful third-party campaigns in the 1970s, eventually becoming the mayor of Burlington in 1981, a position he held for four terms.
In 1990, Sanders was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Vermont's at-large congressional district. He co-founded the Congressional Progressive Caucus in 1991 and served in the House for 16 years before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006. His election marked a historic moment as he became the first non-Republican to hold Vermont's Class 1 Senate seat since 1850. Sanders has since been reelected multiple times and has chaired several Senate committees, including Veterans' Affairs and Budget.
Sanders gained national prominence as a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016 and 2020, finishing second in both races. His 2016 campaign was notable for its grassroots enthusiasm and significant funding from small-dollar donors, winning 23 primaries and caucuses. Following the 2020 primaries, he became a close ally of Joe Biden, while also vocally opposing the Trump administration and advocating for a reshaped Democratic Party.
As a proponent of progressive policies, Sanders champions workers' self-management, universal healthcare, tuition-free education, and a Green New Deal. He advocates for reducing military spending and emphasizes labor rights and environmental concerns in international trade agreements. His influence has contributed to a leftward shift within the Democratic Party, and he continues to promote workplace democracy and elements of the Nordic model.
