Bertel Thorvaldsen

Bertel Thorvaldsen, born on November nineteenth, seventeen seventy, in Copenhagen, emerged as a prominent Danish-Icelandic sculptor and medalist. He hailed from a working-class family and displayed artistic talent early on, gaining acceptance to the Royal Danish Academy of Art at the tender age of eleven. His formative years were spent working alongside his father, a wood carver, where he honed his skills and earned numerous accolades at the academy.

In seventeen ninety-seven, Thorvaldsen embarked on a transformative journey to Rome, where he would spend the next four decades. There, he established himself as a leading figure in the neo-classical movement, operating a large workshop that attracted patrons from across Europe. His works, characterized by their heroic style, garnered international acclaim and solidified his reputation as a master sculptor.

Upon his return to Denmark in eighteen thirty-eight, Thorvaldsen was celebrated as a national hero. His legacy was immortalized with the establishment of the Thorvaldsen Museum, located adjacent to Christiansborg Palace, where his remarkable creations are housed. He rests within the museum's courtyard, a testament to his enduring impact on the art world.

Thorvaldsen was often regarded as the successor to the renowned sculptor Antonio Canova. His notable public monuments include the statues of Nicolaus Copernicus and Józef Poniatowski in Warsaw, the statue of Maximilian I in Munich, and the tomb monument of Pope Pius VII, which stands as a unique achievement by a non-Catholic within St. Peter's Basilica.
