Bertrand Barère

Bertrand Barère, born on September tenth, seventeen fifty-five, was a notable figure in the tumultuous era of the French Revolution. As a politician, diplomat, journalist, lawyer, and writer, he emerged as a prominent member of the National Convention, representing the moderate faction known as the Plain. This group found itself amidst the radical Montagnards, and Barère played a crucial role in the establishment of the Committee of Public Safety in April seventeen ninety-three, as well as the formation of a sans-culottes army later that September.

Barère's political journey was marked by significant events, including his association with the Reign of Terror, a period that saw extreme measures taken against perceived enemies of the revolution. His actions during this time drew comparisons to other influential leaders such as Maximilien Robespierre and Louis de Saint-Just, with Francois Buzot attributing a share of the responsibility for the terror to Barère.

However, the tides of fortune shifted for Barère in the spring of seventeen ninety-four. Following the Festival of the Supreme Being, he found himself at odds with Robespierre, leading to his involvement in a coup that ultimately resulted in his political downfall. This dramatic turn of events underscored the volatile nature of revolutionary politics and the precariousness of power during this era.
