Bertus Aafjes

Bertus Aafjes, born on May twelfth, nineteen fourteen, in Amsterdam, was a distinguished Dutch poet and writer, renowned for his poignant verses that captured the spirit of resistance during the German occupation in World War II.

Throughout his life, Aafjes embraced his devout Catholicism, which profoundly influenced his literary works. He was not only a poet but also a journalist and prose writer, showcasing his versatility across various forms of writing.

Aafjes was a family man, married and the proud father of three daughters and one son. His literary contributions extended beyond poetry; he crafted a five-book series centered around the Japanese samurai Ōoka Tadasuke, demonstrating his diverse interests and storytelling abilities.

In addition to his novels, Aafjes ventured into the world of comics, scripting titles such as Mannetje Bagatel in nineteen forty-six and Kleine Isar, de Vierde Koning in nineteen sixty-two for Eppo Doeve. He also collaborated with Piet Worm on works like Peter-kersen-eter in nineteen forty-three and De Vrolijke Vaderlandse Geschiedenis in nineteen forty-eight.

He spent his later years in Swolgen, where he continued to leave a lasting impact on Dutch literature until his passing.
