Bessie Marsh Brewer

Bessie Marsh Brewer, born in 1884, was a talented Canadian-American artist known for her work as a printmaker, painter, sculptor, and educator. Her artistic journey began at the New York School of Applied Design for Women, where she honed her skills before furthering her education at the prestigious Art Students League under the guidance of renowned artists Robert Henri and John Sloan.

Throughout her career, Brewer made significant contributions to various publications, illustrating for notable magazines such as Century, Phoenix, Collier's, and St. Nicholas. Her artistic prowess was showcased at the 1913 New York Armory Show, where she exhibited three compelling drawings: The Furnished Room, Curiosity, and Putting Her Monday Name on Her Letterbox.

Brewer's artistic style encompassed Realism, Representation, and Naturalism, reflecting her deep understanding of the human experience and the world around her. Beyond her artistic achievements, she was also a devoted mother to Sam Pope Brewer, a New York Times correspondent, whose life took an intriguing turn when his wife later remarried to the infamous Kim Philby.
