Her beloved characters, including Ramona Quimby, Beezus Quimby, Henry Huggins, and Ralph S. Mouse, have become staples in children's literature.

Raised in the Grant Park neighborhood of northeast Portland, Oregon, Cleary's stories often reflect the emotional realism of middle-class family life. Her journey into writing began when she was a librarian and was inspired by a child's question, leading her to pen her first children's book, Henry Huggins.
