Bharrat Jagdeo, born on January twenty-third, nineteen sixty-four, is a prominent Guyanese politician and economist. He has been serving as the Vice President of Guyana since two thousand twenty, under the leadership of President Irfaan Ali. His political journey began earlier when he held the same vice presidential office from nineteen ninety-seven to nineteen ninety-nine during Janet Jagan's presidency.
Jagdeo's tenure as President of Guyana spanned from August eleventh, nineteen ninety-nine, to December third, two thousand eleven. He made history as the first and youngest President to step down in accordance with the term limits he had endorsed in the Guyanese Constitution. His political career also includes a significant role as Minister of Finance from nineteen ninety-five to nineteen ninety-nine, after which he won two consecutive elections in two thousand one and two thousand six.
After the People's Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) faced electoral defeat in two thousand fifteen, Jagdeo took on the role of Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly. His return to power in two thousand twenty marked a significant comeback, as he was sworn in as Vice President once again.
In addition to his national roles, Jagdeo is recognized for his global leadership in sustainable development, green growth, and climate change initiatives. However, his career has not been without controversy; allegations of corruption involving him and several Chinese businessmen surfaced in a Vice News documentary. Jagdeo has firmly rejected these claims, arguing that the documentary lacked irrefutable evidence and relied heavily on hearsay.
