Bhāsa

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Bhāsa

Bhāsa stands as one of the earliest luminaries of Indian theatre, a pioneering playwright whose contributions to Sanskrit literature predate even the renowned Kālidasa. His works, which include thirteen plays, are believed to have been composed between the first and second centuries CE, although estimates of his active period range from the 4th century BCE to the 4th century CE.

For centuries, Bhāsa's plays were lost to time, known only through references in other literary works. It wasn't until the rediscovery of his manuscripts in nineteen ten by the Indian scholar Ganapati Shastri that his genius was brought back to light. Prior to this, Bhāsa was primarily recognized through mentions in texts such as Rajashekhara's Kāvya-mimāmsā, which attributes the play Swapnavāsavadattam to him.

In the introduction to his first play, Mālavikāgnimitram, Kālidāsa himself acknowledged the significance of Bhāsa's contributions, stating, 'Shall we neglect the works of such illustrious authors as Bhāsa, Saūmilla, and Kaviputra? Can the audience feel any respect for the work of a modern poet, a Kālidāsa?' This highlights the enduring impact of Bhāsa's artistry on subsequent generations of playwrights and poets.
