Christopher Lee Rios, known to the world as Big Pun, was born on November 10, 1971, in the Bronx, New York. He emerged from the vibrant underground hip-hop scene, where his talent was discovered by fellow Bronx rapper Fat Joe. Alongside Cuban Link and Triple Seis, Big Pun made his mark by guest appearing on Fat Joe's 1995 album, Jealous One's Envy, which set the stage for his illustrious career.
In 1997, Big Pun signed with Terror Squad Productions and Loud Records, paving the way for his debut studio album, Capital Punishment, released in 1998. The album was met with both critical acclaim and commercial success, earning a nomination for Best Rap Album at the 41st Annual Grammy Awards. It peaked at number five on the Billboard 200 and made history as the first hip hop recording by a Latino solo act to achieve platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America.
Following the success of his debut, Big Pun released his second album, Yeeeah Baby, in 2000. This album reached number three on the Billboard 200, although it was released posthumously, just two months after his untimely passing on February 7, 2000. Big Pun's legacy continues to influence the hip-hop genre, and he is remembered as a pioneer for Latino artists in the industry.
