He has been serving as the junior United States senator from Tennessee since two thousand twenty-one, representing the Republican Party. His political journey is marked by significant roles, including his tenure as the thirtieth United States ambassador to Japan from two thousand seventeen to two thousand nineteen under President Donald Trump.

Before entering the political arena, Hagerty built a successful career in private equity. He co-founded Hagerty Peterson & Company, where he served as a managing director, showcasing his expertise in investment and economic development. His commitment to Tennessee was evident during his time as commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development from two thousand eleven to two thousand fourteen, where he played a pivotal role in bringing a Major League Soccer franchise to Nashville.

Hagerty's diplomatic career began when President Trump nominated him as U.S. ambassador to Japan on March twenty-seventh, two thousand seventeen. The U.S. Senate confirmed his appointment on July thirteenth with an overwhelming eighty-six to twelve vote, and he was sworn in on July twenty-seventh. After resigning in July two thousand nineteen, he set his sights on the U.S. Senate.

In the two thousand twenty election, Hagerty successfully ran for the Senate seat vacated by Lamar Alexander. He triumphed in the Republican primary and went on to defeat Democratic nominee Marquita Bradshaw in the general election, solidifying his position as a key figure in Tennessee politics.
