Bill McKerlich

William Alister M. McKerlich, born on December 2, 1936, in Vancouver, British Columbia, is a distinguished Canadian rower whose athletic prowess has left an indelible mark on the sport. He represented Canada in the 1956 and 1960 Summer Olympics, as well as the 1958 Commonwealth Games, showcasing his exceptional talent on the international stage.

In 1956, McKerlich was a vital member of the Canadian crew that clinched a silver medal in the eight oar event at the Summer Olympics held in Australia. His remarkable journey continued in 1958 when he contributed to the Canadian eight oar crew that secured a gold medal at the British Commonwealth Games in Wales. Two years later, he captained the Canadian team to another silver medal in the eight oar competition at the Rome Olympics, further solidifying his legacy in rowing.

Beyond his competitive achievements, McKerlich has dedicated many years to the sport as a coach, regatta organizer, and co-founder of the Delta-Deas Rowing Club. His commitment to rowing extends to his role as a Canadian and International (FISA) regatta referee. In recognition of his long and meritorious service, he received the Rowing Canada Aviron Award of Merit.

McKerlich's contributions to sports have earned him membership in several prestigious halls of fame, including the University of British Columbia Sports Hall of Fame, the British Columbia Sports Hall of Fame, and the Canadian Olympic Sports Hall of Fame. In addition to his athletic career, he has had a successful professional life as a teacher, school principal, director of instruction, and district school superintendent, working at two British Columbia universities and later at Harvard University as a Visiting Practitioner.
