Bill Nelson, born on September twenty-ninth, nineteen forty-two, is a distinguished American politician, attorney, and former astronaut. His career in public service began in the Florida House of Representatives, where he served from nineteen seventy-two to nineteen seventy-eight. He then represented Florida's Space Coast in the U.S. House of Representatives from nineteen seventy-nine to nineteen ninety-one, before transitioning to a prominent role in the U.S. Senate, where he served from two thousand one to two thousand nineteen.
In January nineteen eighty-six, Nelson made history as the second sitting member of Congress to fly in space, participating as a payload specialist on mission STS-61-C aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia. His commitment to public service continued as he held the position of Treasurer, Insurance Commissioner, and Fire Marshal of Florida from nineteen ninety-five to two thousand one, before being elected to the U.S. Senate, where he was reelected twice, in two thousand six and two thousand twelve.
Throughout his Senate tenure, Nelson was recognized as a centrist and moderate Democrat, advocating for issues such as same-sex marriage, environmental protection, and healthcare expansion. He chaired the Senate Aging Committee from two thousand thirteen to two thousand fifteen and served as the ranking member of the Senate Commerce Committee from two thousand fifteen to two thousand nineteen. After a narrow defeat in his bid for a fourth Senate term in two thousand eighteen, he was appointed to NASA's advisory council in May of the same year.
In March two thousand twenty-one, President Joe Biden nominated Nelson to serve as the Administrator of NASA, a position he was confirmed for by unanimous consent in April. He was sworn in by Vice President Kamala Harris on May third and continued to lead NASA until January twentieth, two thousand twenty-five, marking a significant chapter in his illustrious career.
