He served as the sixty-eighth governor of Massachusetts from nineteen ninety-one to nineteen ninety-seven, where he made a significant impact on state politics. Weld's political journey took a notable turn when he became the running mate of Gary Johnson in the two thousand sixteen presidential election for the Libertarian Party, marking a pivotal moment in his career.

A Harvard graduate, Weld began his professional journey as legal counsel to the United States House Committee on the Judiciary. He later served as the United States Attorney for the District of Massachusetts and as the United States Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division, where he worked on high-profile public corruption cases. In nineteen ninety-six, he was the Republican nominee for the United States Senate but lost to Democratic incumbent John Kerry. After resigning as governor in nineteen ninety-seven, Weld was nominated by President Bill Clinton to serve as the United States Ambassador to Mexico, a nomination he ultimately withdrew due to opposition.

In the years that followed, Weld became increasingly involved in presidential politics. After moving to New York in two thousand, he sought the Republican nomination for governor in the two thousand six election but withdrew when the party endorsed another candidate. In April two thousand nineteen, he announced his challenge to President Donald Trump in the Republican primaries, making history by winning a delegate in the Iowa caucus. Although he suspended his campaign in March two thousand twenty, he garnered significant support, placing second in twenty-two states and receiving up to thirteen percent in protest votes against Trump.
