Billy Dee Williams

William December Williams Jr., born on April 6, 1937, is a multifaceted American talent known for his work as an actor, novelist, and painter. With a career spanning over six decades, he has made significant contributions to both film and television, appearing in more than 100 roles. Williams is perhaps best recognized for his iconic portrayal of Lando Calrissian in the Star Wars franchise, a role that made him the first black actor to hold a major part in this beloved series.

Raised in Harlem, Williams showcased his artistic talents early on, making his Broadway debut at the tender age of seven in The Firebrand of Florence. He later honed his skills at The High School of Music & Art and earned a painting scholarship to the National Academy of Fine Arts and Design, where he received the Hallgarten Prize for his artistic achievements in the mid-1950s. To support his passion for painting, he returned to acting, which led to a successful career in the entertainment industry.

Williams' film debut came in 1959 with The Last Angry Man, but it was his performance in the television movie Brian's Song in 1971 that garnered him national attention and an Emmy nomination for Best Actor. His filmography includes notable titles such as Mahogany, Scott Joplin, and Batman, where he portrayed Harvey Dent. In addition to his film work, Williams has an extensive television career, with over 70 credits, including roles in Gideon's Crossing, Dynasty, and General Hospital.

Throughout his career, Williams has received numerous accolades, including three NAACP Image Awards and the NAACP Lifetime Achievement Award. He was inducted into the Black Filmmaker's Hall of Fame in 1984 and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1985.
