Billy Whelan

William Augustine Whelan, affectionately known as Billy or Liam Whelan, was born on April 1, 1935, in Dublin, Ireland. He was the youngest of seven children in the Whelan family, born to John and Elizabeth Whelan. His father, a talented centre half-back for the Dublin club Brunswick, played a pivotal role in securing the FAI Junior Shield in 1924. Tragically, John passed away in 1943, leaving a lasting impact on young Billy's life.

Whelan's early years were marked by a passion for sports, particularly Gaelic games, where he earned a medal playing for St Peter's of Phibsboro. His mother was a devoted supporter of Shamrock Rovers, instilling a love for football in her children. This passion eventually led Billy to pursue a career in association football, where he excelled as an inside-forward.

His promising career was cut short when he tragically died at the age of twenty-two in the Munich air disaster, one of eight Manchester United players who lost their lives in the tragedy. Just before the ill-fated flight took off, Whelan was heard expressing his fears, stating, 'This may be death, but I'm ready.' His bravery and talent left an indelible mark on the sport.

In recognition of his contributions and legacy, the Dublin GAA club Naomh Fionnbarra honored him in 2006 by renaming a railway bridge near his birthplace after him. The clubhouse also proudly displays Whelan's Manchester United membership card, a testament to his enduring legacy in the world of football.
