Bipin Rawat, born on March sixteenth, nineteen fifty-eight, was a distinguished Indian military officer who rose to the rank of four-star general in the Indian Army. He made history as the first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Indian Armed Forces, a position he held from January twenty twenty until his untimely death in December twenty twenty-one. Prior to this pivotal role, he served as the fifty-seventh Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee and the twenty-seventh Chief of the Army Staff (COAS).
Hailing from Pauri in the Pauri Garhwal district of present-day Uttarakhand, Rawat was born into a military family, the son of Lieutenant General Lakshman Singh Rawat. He began his military journey at the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy, where he was honored with the Sword of Honour. His commissioning into the eleven Gorkha Rifles marked the beginning of a remarkable career, during which he participated in the 1987 Sino-Indian skirmish in the Sumdorong Chu valley and commanded troops along the Line of Actual Control in Arunachal Pradesh.
As he advanced through the ranks, Rawat commanded the nineteen Infantry Division at Uri and later served as the Major General General Staff at Headquarters Eastern Command. His leadership during the two thousand fifteen Indian counter-insurgency operation in Myanmar showcased his strategic acumen. Promoted to Army Commander grade, he took charge as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Southern Command before being appointed Vice Chief of the Army Staff. In December two thousand sixteen, he was appointed as the Chief of the Army Staff, superseding two senior generals.
During his tenure, Rawat played a crucial role in various military operations and was instrumental in managing the military border standoff at Doklam in two thousand seventeen. His leadership extended beyond national borders as he served with the United Nations, commanding a Multinational Brigade as part of MONUSCO. His legacy as a military leader is marked by his commitment to the Indian Armed Forces and his contributions to national security.
