Birsa Munda

Birsa Munda, born on November fifteenth, eighteen seventy-five, was a prominent Indian tribal independence activist and a revered folk hero of the Munda tribe. He emerged as a significant figure during the late nineteenth century in the Bengal Presidency, now known as Jharkhand, where he led a religious millenarian movement against British colonial rule. His efforts were particularly concentrated in the Munda belt regions of Khunti, Tamar, Sarwada, and Bandgaon, marking him as a pivotal player in the Indian independence movement.

Educated in Salga under the mentorship of Jaipal Nag, Birsa's journey took a transformative turn when he converted to Christianity to attend the German Mission School. However, after leaving school, he founded a new faith called Birsait, which quickly attracted members from the Munda community. This movement posed a significant challenge to British authorities, as the Birsaits openly identified the British and Christian missionaries as their primary adversaries.

The Munda revolt, which Birsa spearheaded, was fueled by widespread discontent over the unjust land grabbing practices perpetrated by colonial and local authorities. These actions severely disrupted the traditional land systems of the tribal communities. Birsa Munda's legacy is not only defined by his resistance against the British and missionary conversion efforts but also by his enduring influence on the Munda and Oraon communities. His portrait proudly hangs in the Indian Parliament Museum, symbolizing his lasting impact on India's struggle for independence.
