In nineteen eighty-nine, Atcheynum was selected by the Hartford Whalers in the third round of the NHL entry draft, being the fifty-second overall pick. Although he never played for the Whalers, he spent the initial three years of his professional career in the minor leagues, achieving notable success by winning the Calder Cup with the Springfield Indians in nineteen ninety-one.
His career took a pivotal turn when he was chosen by the Ottawa Senators in the nineteen ninety-two NHL expansion draft, leading to his NHL debut in the following season. After a brief return to the minors, Atcheynum solidified his place in the NHL during the nineteen ninety-seven to ninety-eight season with the St. Louis Blues.
