Bob Backlund, born on August fourteenth, nineteen forty-nine, is a distinguished American retired amateur and professional wrestler, as well as an actor. His wrestling career is most notable for his time in the World Wide Wrestling Federation, later known as the World Wrestling Federation, where he made a significant impact from nineteen seventy-six to nineteen eighty-four and again in the 1990s.
Backlund's legacy is highlighted by his impressive two-time reign as the WWWF/WWF Champion, with a remarkable two thousand one hundred thirty-five-day title reign recognized as the second longest in the championship's history. His journey began in amateur wrestling at North Dakota State University, where he competed for the Bison during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
In nineteen seventy-three, Backlund transitioned to professional wrestling, training under Eddie Sharkey and making his debut in the American Wrestling Association. He quickly rose through the ranks, capturing the NWA Missouri Heavyweight Championship in nineteen seventy-six before joining the WWWF later that year. Backlund's first championship victory came in nineteen seventy-eight when he defeated Superstar Billy Graham, holding the title until nineteen eighty-three.
After a brief hiatus from the WWF, he made a triumphant return in nineteen ninety-two, famously lasting over an hour in the Royal Rumble match, a record that stood until two thousand four. His second championship win came at the nineteen ninety-four Survivor Series, where he defeated Bret Hart, although he lost the title just three days later to Diesel at a house show in Madison Square Garden.
Beyond his time in the WWWF/WWF, Backlund has also found success in various wrestling promotions, including Wrestling and Romance, Championship Wrestling from Florida, and New Japan Pro-Wrestling. His contributions to the sport were recognized with his induction into the WWE Hall of Fame in two thousand thirteen and the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame in two thousand sixteen.
