Bob McDonnell, born on June fifteenth, nineteen fifty-four, is a prominent American lawyer and politician who served as the seventy-first governor of Virginia from two thousand ten to two thousand fourteen. A member of the Republican Party, McDonnell's political career began in the Virginia House of Delegates, where he served from nineteen ninety-two to two thousand six. He then held the position of attorney general of Virginia from two thousand six to two thousand nine.
McDonnell's gubernatorial campaign was marked by the slogan 'Bob's for Jobs,' which resonated with voters during the challenging economic climate of the late two thousand recession. He won the general election in two thousand nine against Democratic state Senator Creigh Deeds by a significant seventeen-point margin. As governor, he championed initiatives such as privatization and offshore drilling, and sought to improve transportation funding through asset sales, including a controversial proposal to auction off state-operated liquor stores.
However, McDonnell's tenure was marred by legal troubles. On January twenty-first, two thousand fourteen, he and his wife, Maureen, were indicted on federal corruption charges related to receiving improper gifts and loans from a Virginia businessman. Following a trial, they were convicted on most counts in September of that year, making McDonnell the first Virginia governor to face felony indictment or conviction. He was sentenced to two years in prison, followed by two years of supervised release, although he remained free on bond during the appeals process.
In a significant turn of events, the Supreme Court of the United States unanimously overturned McDonnell's conviction on June twenty-seventh, two thousand sixteen. Shortly thereafter, the Justice Department announced it would not pursue the case further, leading to the dismissal of charges against the McDonnells. As of two thousand seventeen, McDonnell has transitioned into academia, serving as a professor at Regent University, while also managing the McDonnell Group, a real estate consulting firm he runs with his sister.
