Bobby Rush

Bobby Rush, born on November twenty-third, nineteen forty-six, is a prominent American politician, insurance broker, and pastor. He is best known for his three-decade tenure as the U.S. representative for Illinois's first congressional district, a role he held until his retirement in two thousand twenty-three. Rush's political journey is deeply intertwined with his activism; he was a civil rights advocate during the tumultuous 1960s and co-founded the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party, making significant contributions to the fight for social justice.

First elected to Congress in nineteen ninety-two, Rush secured consecutive reelections, establishing himself as a key figure in the Democratic Party. Notably, he is the only politician to have defeated Barack Obama in an election, achieving this milestone in the two thousand Democratic primary for Illinois's first congressional district. His district, primarily located on the South Side of Chicago, was characterized by a predominantly African-American population, which was sixty-five percent from two thousand three to early two thousand thirteen.

In two thousand eleven, following the 2010 census, the Illinois General Assembly redistricted Rush's area. While it remained a minority-majority district, the demographic composition shifted to fifty-one point three percent African American, thirty-six point one percent White, nine point eight percent Hispanic, and two percent Asian by early two thousand thirteen. On January third, two thousand twenty-two, Rush announced his decision to retire from Congress, marking the end of an era in his long and impactful political career.
