Bodhidharma

Bodhidharma, a semi-legendary Buddhist monk, is celebrated as the pivotal figure who introduced Chan Buddhism to China, earning him the title of the first Chinese patriarch. His life, shrouded in mystery and legend, is believed to have unfolded during the fifth or sixth century CE, with modern scholarship suggesting he was active around the early fifth century.

Originating from the Western Regions, which may refer to Central Asia or the Indian subcontinent, Bodhidharma is often depicted in Buddhist art as a large-nosed, bearded figure with wide eyes, embodying a non-Chinese appearance. Various accounts describe him as either a Persian Central Asian or the third son of a great Indian king, highlighting the ambiguity surrounding his origins.

His arrival in China is debated, with some sources placing it during the Liu Song dynasty, while others suggest the Liang dynasty. Regardless of the exact timeline, Bodhidharma's influence on meditation practices and his teachings, particularly centered around the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra, have left an indelible mark on Buddhist philosophy.

Additionally, Bodhidharma is popularly associated with the founding of Shaolin kung fu, a notion that gained traction in the twentieth century, although it is rooted in earlier texts like the seventeenth-century Yijin Jing.
