Bogaletch Gebre

Bogaletch Gebre, born in 1960, was a pioneering Ethiopian scientist and activist whose work significantly impacted the lives of women in her country. Alongside her sister Fikirte Gebre, she co-founded KMG Ethiopia, an organization dedicated to combating harmful traditional practices such as female genital mutilation and bridal abductions. These practices, which involved the kidnapping and forced marriage of young women, were alarmingly prevalent, with reports indicating they constituted sixty-nine percent of marriages in Ethiopia as of two thousand three.

Under Gebre's leadership, KMG Ethiopia achieved remarkable success, reducing the rate of bridal abductions in the Kembatta region by over ninety percent. Furthermore, the organization played a crucial role in decreasing the prevalence of female genital mutilation from one hundred percent to just three percent, showcasing the profound impact of her advocacy and community engagement.

Throughout her career, Gebre received numerous accolades for her contributions to health and human rights. In two thousand five, she was honored with the North-South Prize, followed by the Jonathan Mann Award for Global Health and Human Rights in two thousand seven. Her dedication to the development of Africa was further recognized in May two thousand thirteen when she was awarded the King Baudouin International Development Prize.

Gebre's legacy as a champion for women's rights and a catalyst for change in Ethiopia continues to inspire future generations. Her work not only transformed the lives of countless women but also ignited a movement that empowered women across the nation.
