Bohuslav Sobotka

Bohuslav Sobotka, born on October twenty-third, nineteen seventy-one, is a prominent Czech politician, economist, and lawyer. He served as the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic from January two thousand fourteen to December two thousand seventeen and was the leader of the Czech Social Democratic Party (ČSSD) from two thousand ten until his resignation in June two thousand seventeen. His political career began when he was elected as a member of the Chamber of Deputies in nineteen ninety-six, a position he held until two thousand eighteen.

In two thousand two, Sobotka was appointed Minister of Finance in the cabinet of Vladimír Špidla, later serving under Prime Ministers Stanislav Gross and Jiří Paroubek. He also held the position of Deputy Prime Minister on two occasions. Following the legislative elections in two thousand six, he transitioned to an opposition role, and in two thousand eleven, he was elected as the leader of the Social Democrats, becoming the Leader of the Opposition against the cabinet of Petr Nečas.

After his party's success in the two thousand thirteen legislative elections, Sobotka was appointed Prime Minister on January seventeenth, two thousand fourteen, by President Miloš Zeman. His government focused on addressing tax evasion through measures like electronic sales registration and a VAT control system. Sobotka's administration also worked to strengthen relations with China, implement police reforms, repeal the Civil Service Act, and introduce a smoking ban.

Throughout his tenure, Sobotka had notable clashes with President Zeman, particularly regarding the Russian intervention in Ukraine and domestic policies. He faced a government crisis in May two thousand seventeen, which led to his resignation, although he later withdrew it. Sobotka made history as the first Prime Minister in fifteen years to complete a full term in office. On June fourteenth, two thousand seventeen, he resigned as leader of ČSSD due to low polling ahead of the legislative elections but continued as Prime Minister until he was succeeded by Andrej Babiš in December two thousand seventeen. He retired from the Chamber of Deputies on March thirty-first, two thousand eighteen, citing personal reasons.
