Bola Tinubu, born on March twenty-nine, nineteen fifty-two, is a prominent Nigerian politician currently serving as the sixteenth president of Nigeria since his election in 2023. His political journey began in the early nineties when he emerged as a senatorial candidate for Lagos West under the Social Democratic Party. Following the dissolution of the Senate by military dictator Sani Abacha in nineteen ninety-three, Tinubu went into exile, becoming an activist for democracy as part of the National Democratic Coalition movement.
After returning to Nigeria in the eighties, Tinubu had a successful career as an accountant with Mobil Nigeria before transitioning into politics. He gained significant recognition when he won the Lagos State gubernatorial election in the first post-transition election in nineteen ninety-nine as a member of the Alliance for Democracy. His leadership was marked by a second term victory in two thousand and seven, after which he played a pivotal role in the formation of the All Progressives Congress in two thousand thirteen.
In his presidency, Tinubu has made bold moves, including the termination of previous fuel subsidies due to fiscal pressures and the dissolution of governing boards of various federal agencies. His administration has also seen a significant reshaping of military and paramilitary leadership, alongside active engagement in regional security efforts, particularly in response to the twenty twenty-five Benin coup d'état, and cooperation with the United States against the Islamic State. Despite facing challenges, including an alleged coup attempt, Tinubu's leadership continues to shape Nigeria's political landscape.
