Boris Sidis

Boris Sidis, born on October twelfth, eighteen sixty-seven, was a prominent American psychopathologist, psychologist, physician, psychiatrist, and philosopher of education. He made significant contributions to the field by founding the New York State Psychopathic Institute and the Journal of Abnormal Psychology. Sidis is perhaps best known as the father of child prodigy William James Sidis, whose extraordinary intellect captured public attention.

Originally from the Russian Empire, Sidis emigrated to the United States to escape political persecution. His journey was fraught with challenges, including a two-year imprisonment, as noted by author Amy Wallace. Alongside his wife and children, he fled the pogroms, seeking a safer life in America.

Sidis pursued an impressive academic career, earning four degrees from Harvard University. His work aimed to unravel the complexities of human behavior, and he became known for his critical stance against mainstream psychology and figures like Sigmund Freud. Unfortunately, this opposition led to his eventual ostracization from the psychological community.

In his personal life, Sidis was married to a maternal aunt of Clifton Fadiman, a noted American intellectual. He passed away in nineteen twenty-three at the age of fifty-six, leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence the fields of psychology and education.
