He made history as the first World Junior Champion in nineteen fifty-one and went on to become a three-time Yugoslav Champion, clinching titles in nineteen fifty-eight, nineteen sixty-four, and nineteen seventy-two.
Ivkov was not only a formidable competitor but also a significant figure in the Chess Olympiad, representing Yugoslavia twelve times from nineteen fifty-six to nineteen eighty. His participation in six European Team Championships further solidified his status as one of the most decorated players in the history of the sport.
Throughout his career, Ivkov achieved remarkable success in various prestigious tournaments, including notable victories in Mar del Plata and Buenos Aires in nineteen fifty-five, Beverwijk in nineteen sixty-one, Zagreb in nineteen sixty-five, Sarajevo in nineteen sixty-seven, Amsterdam-IBM in nineteen seventy-four, and Moscow in nineteen ninety-nine. For over fifteen years, he was the second-ranking Yugoslav player, following Svetozar Gligorić.
