Borzuya

Borzuya, a distinguished Persian physician of the late Sasanian era, flourished during the reign of Khosrow I. His contributions to the fields of medicine, literature, and philosophy are noteworthy, particularly his role as a translator. He is best known for his translation of the Indian Panchatantra from Sanskrit into Pahlavi, although both his version and the original Sanskrit text have unfortunately been lost to history.

Despite the loss of his translation, Borzuya's work had a lasting impact. His Pahlavi version was later translated into Arabic by the renowned scholar Ibn al-Muqaffa, who titled it Kalīla wa-Dimna, or The Fables of Bidpai. This work not only preserved the essence of the original tales but also introduced Borzuya's insights and reflections on life.

The introduction to Kalīla wa-Dimna features an autobiography of Borzuya, revealing his philosophical journey and the motivations behind his medical practice. His narrative reflects a deep commitment to philanthropy, a quest for truth, and a critical stance towards established religious doctrines. Additionally, his later embrace of asceticism highlights his profound inner development and search for meaning.
