Boyko Borisov

Boyko Borisov, born on June thirteenth, nineteen fifty-nine, is a prominent Bulgarian politician and military officer who has made significant contributions to the political landscape of Bulgaria. He is best known for his tenure as Prime Minister, a role he has held on three separate occasions, totaling nine years from two thousand nine to two thousand twenty-one. Borisov is the founder and current leader of the conservative political party Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB), which he established in December two thousand five.

His political career began when he was elected Mayor of Sofia in two thousand five. Following a landslide victory in the two thousand nine general election, he resigned as mayor to assume the role of Prime Minister, defeating the incumbent Socialist Party. His first term was cut short in two thousand thirteen due to widespread protests against government policies, but he returned to power after leading GERB to victory in the two thousand fourteen elections.

Borisov's second term ended in January two thousand seventeen after GERB's defeat in the presidential election, yet he managed to secure a third term following a snap election later that year. Under his leadership, Bulgaria saw improvements in macroeconomic conditions and political stability, although the country remained the poorest member state of the European Union, with a significant portion of the population living below the poverty line.

Despite his political achievements, Borisov's tenure has been marred by allegations of corruption and electoral fraud, leading to a challenging political environment. In March two thousand twenty-two, he was detained over allegations of misuse of EU funds, although he was released after twenty-four hours. Additionally, Borisov made headlines in two thousand thirteen when he became the oldest player to compete for a Bulgarian professional football club, showcasing his diverse interests beyond politics.
