He served as the forty-seventh Governor of New Jersey from nineteen seventy-four to nineteen eighty-two, leaving a significant mark on the state's political landscape.

Byrne's legal career began as a private attorney in Newark and East Orange. His ascent in public service started in nineteen fifty-nine when he was appointed by Governor Robert B. Meyner to serve as Essex County Prosecutor, a position he held until nineteen sixty-eight. His integrity earned him the nickname 'the man who couldn't be bought,' a phrase that resonated during a time of rampant corruption and helped elevate his public profile.

In nineteen seventy-three, leveraging his reputation, Byrne launched his campaign for governor, using the aforementioned slogan to great effect.
