He netted an impressive six hundred fifty-six goals over more than one thousand five hundred NHL games, making him a leader among active players in goals scored at the time of his retirement. Notably, he is the only player in NHL history to achieve over six hundred goals while accumulating over two thousand penalty minutes.

Shanahan's contributions to the sport extended beyond the NHL, as he represented Canada on the international stage. He was a key player in securing the Canada Cup championship in nineteen ninety-one, a gold medal at the nineteen ninety-four World Championships, and another gold at the 2002 Winter Olympics, earning him a place in the elite Triple Gold Club.
