Brent Sutter, born on June 10, 1962, is a distinguished Canadian former ice hockey player and coach, celebrated for his remarkable contributions to the sport. Selected seventeenth overall by the New York Islanders in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft, Sutter enjoyed an illustrious eighteen-year career, playing over one thousand games with the Islanders and the Chicago Blackhawks. Renowned as one of the premier face-off specialists of his era, he clinched the Stanley Cup twice with the Islanders and earned All-Star honors, while also representing Canada on multiple occasions, securing three Canada Cup victories.
After hanging up his skates in 1998, Sutter transitioned into coaching, acquiring the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League. Over eight seasons, he served as both head coach and general manager, leading the team to a Memorial Cup championship in two thousand one. His coaching prowess extended to the Canadian junior team, where he guided them to gold medals at the World Junior Hockey Championships in two thousand five and two thousand six, along with a victory in the two thousand seven Super Series. His impressive record of nineteen wins, no losses, and one tie in three years as the national junior team coach speaks volumes about his effectiveness.
In 2007, Sutter took the helm as head coach of the New Jersey Devils, where he led the team to a division title in just two seasons. He later joined the Calgary Flames, working alongside his brother Darryl, who was the Flames' general manager at the time. Brent's legacy is further enriched by his connection to the famous Sutter family, which boasts six brothers, including NHL players Brian, Darryl, Duane, Ron, and Rich. Notably, Brent and Duane played together for the Islanders during their Stanley Cup victories in 1982 and 1983.
Brent's influence extends beyond his playing and coaching career; he has also mentored his son Brandon and nephew Brett during their time with the Red Deer Rebels, both of whom have made their mark in the NHL. His daughter Brooke showcased her athletic talent in volleyball at Red Deer College, earning first team conference all-star honors in 2013. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the sport, Sutter was inducted into the New York Islanders Hall of Fame on January 18, 2025.
