At the age of eighteen, Bell made the pivotal move to Los Angeles, where he began his musical journey playing bass guitar for the band Carnival Art. During his time with Carnival Art, he helped release three studio albums before departing in nineteen ninety-three. Shortly thereafter, he joined Weezer at the request of band member Matt Sharp, stepping in to replace founding member Jason Cropper during the recording of their debut album.

Weezer's self-titled debut album, released in nineteen ninety-four, became a cultural phenomenon, propelled by hit singles such as 'Buddy Holly', 'Undone – The Sweater Song', and 'Say It Ain't So'. The album not only achieved critical acclaim but also commercial success, marking the beginning of a remarkable career for Bell.
