Brian Gallant, born on April 27, 1982, is a distinguished Canadian politician and lawyer who made history as the 33rd premier of New Brunswick. He took office on October 7, 2014, at the young age of thirty-two, making him the second youngest premier in the province's history, following George Edwin King.
Gallant's political journey began when he won the Liberal leadership in October 2012. He secured his seat in the riding of Kent during a by-election on April 15, 2013, shortly before being sworn in as Leader of the Opposition. His leadership culminated in a significant victory in the 2014 election, where he led the Liberal party to defeat the Progressive Conservative government of David Alward.
During his tenure, Gallant's government faced a narrow defeat in the 2018 election, where the Liberals won twenty-one seats against the Progressive Conservatives' twenty-two, despite winning the popular vote by nearly six percentage points. Following this loss, he announced his intention to step down as Liberal leader on November 15, 2018, and officially resigned as MLA for Shediac Bay-Dieppe on October 7, 2019.
In addition to his political career, Gallant is currently the CEO of the Canadian Centre for the Purpose of the Corporation, a research think tank dedicated to exploring the role of corporations in society. His diverse background includes Acadian and Dutch heritage, and he has continued to influence Canadian politics and policy through his advisory roles.
