As a member of the Democratic Party, he served in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 182nd district from two thousand thirteen until two thousand twenty-two, making history as the first openly gay elected state legislator in Pennsylvania.

During his tenure, Sims was a passionate advocate for equality and social justice, winning re-election on November sixth, two thousand eighteen. His commitment to public service extended beyond the legislature, as he sought the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania in two thousand twenty-two, where he garnered twenty-five percent of the vote, finishing in second place.

After leaving public office, Sims continued his advocacy work as the managing director of Government Affairs and Public Policy at Out Leadership. He also serves on the Board of Trustees for the Tyler Clementi Foundation and holds the position of CEO at Agenda PAC, furthering his mission to promote equality and civil rights.
