Brigitte Bierlein, born on June twenty-fifth, nineteen forty-nine, is a distinguished Austrian jurist and politician who made history as the first woman to serve in two significant roles: President of the Constitutional Court and Chancellor of Austria.
Her career began as the advocate general of the Procurator's Office, where she held the position of chief public prosecutor from nineteen ninety to two thousand two. Bierlein's expertise in law led her to become a member and vice president of the Constitutional Court in two thousand three, further solidifying her influence in the Austrian legal system.
In the wake of the Ibiza affair, she was appointed Chancellor of Austria by President Alexander Van der Bellen after a parliamentary motion of no confidence ousted the first government of Sebastian Kurz. This marked a pivotal moment in Austrian politics, as it was the first successful motion of no confidence in modern history. Bierlein served as Chancellor until the new government led by Kurz was sworn in following the legislative election on September twenty-ninth, two thousand nineteen.
