Brit McRoberts

Brit Lind-Petersen-McRoberts, born on February 10, 1957, in Copenhagen, Denmark, is a distinguished former track and field athlete who made her mark in middle-distance running. After relocating to Canada, she proudly represented her adoptive country on the international stage, beginning her competitive journey in 1979. That year, she achieved a commendable seventh place in the 800 meters at the Pan American Games and followed it up with a sixth-place finish in the 1500 meters at the IAAF World Cup.

McRoberts' athletic prowess shone brightly as she clinched her first national title in 1980, winning the 1500 meters at the Canadian Track and Field Championships. Over the years, she added three more national titles to her name, including victories in the 800 meters in 1981 and 1983, and a second title in the 1500 meters in 1986. Her remarkable performances in 1983 led her to set Canadian National records in both the 800 meters (two minutes and zero point zero two seconds) and 1500 meters (four minutes and three point thirty-six seconds).

In addition to her national achievements, McRoberts excelled at various prestigious events, including winning the women's mile run at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships in 1984. She also broke the National outdoor mile record with a time of four minutes and twenty-four point sixty-one seconds in Nice, France, in 1986. Despite being a gold medal favorite for the 1500 meters at the 1986 Commonwealth Games, a virus in the athletes' village forced her to withdraw from the competition.

Throughout her career, McRoberts earned three major medals in the 1500 meters: a gold medal at the 1981 Pacific Conference Games and bronze medals at the 1985 IAAF World Indoor Games and the 1987 Pan American Games. She was a finalist at several global events, including the 1983 World Championships in Athletics, the 1984 Summer Olympics, and the Commonwealth Games in 1986 and 1990. Representing the Americas at the 1981 IAAF World Cup, she also ran for Canada at the 1987 World Championships in Athletics.

After her illustrious athletic career, McRoberts graduated from Simon Fraser University with a degree in Kinesiology and Communications. She later returned to her alma mater to serve as the head coach of the track and field program, continuing her legacy in athletics under her married name, Brit Townsend.
