Brother Roger

Roger Schutz, known to many as Brother Roger, was born on May twelfth, nineteen fifteen, in Switzerland. He emerged as a prominent Christian leader and theologian, dedicating his life to fostering unity among different Christian denominations.

In nineteen forty, Brother Roger founded the Taizé Community, an ecumenical monastic community nestled in the picturesque Burgundy region of France. His vision for Taizé was to create a space where individuals from diverse backgrounds could come together in prayer and reflection, transcending denominational boundaries.

As the first prior of the community, Brother Roger played a pivotal role in its development and growth. Under his leadership, Taizé became a sanctuary for thousands of young pilgrims each week, drawing international attention and fostering a spirit of reconciliation and peace.

Tragically, Brother Roger's life was cut short when he was murdered on August sixteenth, two thousand five. However, his legacy endures through the ongoing work of the Taizé Community, which continues to welcome and inspire individuals from around the world.
