His professional journey began in nineteen seventy-nine with the Vancouver Whitecaps in the North American Soccer League. It was during a loan spell at Crewe Alexandra in the nineteen seventy-nine to eighty season that he caught the eye of Liverpool, leading to his signing in nineteen eighty-one.

During his remarkable thirteen-year stint at Liverpool, Grobbelaar made an impressive six hundred twenty-eight appearances, including four hundred forty in the League.
