Bruce Rauner

Bruce Rauner, born on February eighteenth, nineteen fifty-seven, is an accomplished American businessman, venture capitalist, and politician. He served as the forty-second governor of Illinois from two thousand fifteen to two thousand nineteen. A member of the Republican Party, Rauner built a successful career in investment management, co-founding and chairing the Chicago-based private equity firm GTCR.

After retiring as chairman of GTCR in two thousand twelve, Rauner transitioned from the business world to civic and political engagement. He took on leadership roles in Chicago's tourism bureau and the Chicago Public Education Fund, which paved the way for his entry into politics. In two thousand thirteen, he announced his candidacy for governor, winning a competitive Republican primary and ultimately defeating incumbent Democratic governor Pat Quinn in the two thousand fourteen election.

As governor, Rauner positioned himself as a moderate-to-liberal Republican, advocating for right-to-work laws, term limits, and the protection of abortion rights, while also seeking to lower income taxes. However, his efforts were largely impeded by the Democratic supermajorities in the Illinois General Assembly, leading to a significant two-year budget crisis due to ongoing disagreements with Democratic leaders.

In two thousand eighteen, Rauner faced a primary challenge from conservative State Representative Jeanne Ives, which he narrowly overcame. However, he ultimately suffered a historic defeat to Democratic nominee JB Pritzker, marking a significant moment in Illinois political history as he became the last Republican to hold statewide office in the state as of two thousand twenty-five.
