McCabe's journey in hockey began in Calgary, Alberta, where he spent the majority of his minor hockey career. His talent was recognized early on, leading to his selection as the fortieth overall pick by the New York Islanders in the nineteen ninety-three NHL Draft. During his time in the Western Hockey League (WHL), he made a significant impact, competing in the nineteen ninety-five Memorial Cup and earning spots on back-to-back WHL first All-Star teams.

His NHL career took off with the Islanders, followed by notable stints with the Vancouver Canucks and Chicago Blackhawks. However, it was during his seven-season tenure with the Toronto Maple Leafs that McCabe truly made his mark, becoming a key player and fan favorite.
