Budai

Budai, born in the year eight hundred fifty, is a revered figure in Chan Buddhism, often recognized as the future Buddha Maitreya. His legacy flourished during the Later Liang Dynasty, where he became a symbol of joy and abundance, transcending cultural boundaries to be venerated in Vietnam, Korea, and Japan.

The name 'Budai' translates to 'cloth sack', a nod to the bag he is frequently depicted carrying as he roams. His cheerful demeanor and unconventional lifestyle set him apart from traditional Buddhist masters. Known as the 'Laughing Buddha', Budai is almost always portrayed with a broad smile, embodying a spirit of happiness and contentment.

Visually, Budai is characterized by his large stomach, which may symbolize generosity and forgiveness. His fondness for food and drink is a recurring theme in many tales about him, further endearing him to followers. In the Western world, he is often mistakenly referred to as the 'Fat Buddha', highlighting the cultural interpretations of his image.
